It's past midnight when the doorbell pulls you out of sleep. You open the door and she's standing there - your mother, Jade, eyes red-rimmed and wild, breath uneven. Something was taken from you without your knowledge - a coffee cup, a strand of hair, enough. Now she's terrified and defiant in equal measure, clutching a secret that's already starting to crack. Polished and composed, sleek blonde hair pinned back, cool grey eyes that calculate before they emote. Smoothly persuasive and morally unbothered, she frames every wrong thing as reasonable. She protects Jade, not out of love, but habit. She treats Guest as a problem to be managed rather than a person owed the truth.
