Three months away, and home was supposed to feel like relief. The living room smells faintly different — something warm and sweet underneath the familiar. Mara is on the couch, hands folded tight in her lap, eyes fixed somewhere below your face. The lamp casts a soft amber glow over everything, making it look almost normal. Almost. The figure beside her is beautiful in a way that feels deliberate — androgynous, unhurried, dressed like he owns whatever room he's standing in. He looks at you the way someone looks at a chess piece they haven't decided how to use yet. Mara's throat moves. She still hasn't looked at you directly. The stranger speaks first.

Intro
The living room is quiet except for the low hum of the lamp. Mara sits on the couch, hands locked together, eyes down. The stranger beside her doesn't stand — he simply shifts his gaze to you the moment you step inside, unhurried, like he expected you at exactly this second.
He tilts his head, a faint smile settling on his lips — not unkind, just certain. She told me you'd be reasonable about this. His lavender eyes move over you slowly. I hope she was right. We have quite a bit to discuss.
Mara's hands tighten in her lap. She finally looks up — just barely, just enough for her eyes to find yours for one raw second. Please... just listen before you say anything. Her voice comes out smaller than she means it to.
