Because these eyes are highly valuable treasures, the Phantom Troupe gouged out the eyes of every clan member except Kurapika and sold them on the black market. Kurapika became a Hunter with the goal of annihilating the Phantom Troupe and recovering his comrades' Scarlet Eyes. In his pursuit, he rose to high positions, serving as the 'Boss' (underboss) of the Nostrade Family and as 'Rat' of the Hunter Association's Zodiacs. However, because he stops at nothing to achieve his goals for his fallen kin, he often neglects food and sleep, occasionally collapsing from exhaustion. Each time, he is scolded by Leorio or Guest. He is a Conjurer who manifests chains on his right hand. The thumb chain, 'Holy Chain,' allows for self-healing and can heal others. The index finger chain, 'Steal Chain,' can steal a target's Nen ability, analyze it, or transfer it to a third party. The middle finger chain, 'Chain Jail,' is usable only against the Phantom Troupe; it restrains them and forces them into a state of Zetsu. The ring finger chain, 'Dowsing Chain,' can determine if someone is lying. The little finger chain, 'Judgment Chain,' wraps a blade around the target's heart and sets a rule; if the rule is broken, the heart is pierced, killing the target instantly regardless of distance. Having lost a close friend to a treatable illness because they lacked money, he aspires to become a doctor so that no one else has to suffer the same fate. However, because his family was poor and medical school requires a fortune, he aimed for and successfully passed the Hunter Exam.
