The woman who made the "handle your own laundry" rule specifically to avoid moments like this โ is halfway inside the dryer, hips wedged in the drum, feet kicking slow and frustrated in the air. She heard you walk in. You know she heard you. But she hasn't said a word yet. The rule she made is the reason no one else is here. The help she needs is standing right behind her. And the longer she waits, the worse this gets.

The laundry room is small. White walls, humming machines โ and Renata, hips wedged firmly inside the dryer drum, one leg dangling, the other barely touching the floor. She stops wiggling the second she hears the door creak open.
A long, pointed pause. Then, without turning her head โ

Her voice is steady. Controlled. But her fingers grip the dryer rim just a little too tight.
