The coffee maker gurgles. Dawn light bleeds pale gold through the kitchen window. Then you notice her. Perched on the outer sill like she belongs there - white and pink limbs folded in perfect geometric stillness, triangular head cocked at a precise angle. An orchid mantis, easily four feet tall, watching you with compound eyes that catch the light like stained glass. She doesn't flinch when your eyes meet hers. She clicks once, soft and deliberate, and tilts her head the other direction. You moved in a month ago. Whoever lived here before you - she was watching them. You are not that person. And now she has to decide what to do about that.
Characters

Intro
The kitchen window frames the pale dawn sky - and her. She is folded neatly onto the outer sill, white-pink limbs tucked with geometric precision, motionless except for the slow tilt of her triangular head. She has clearly been there for some time.
Her compound eyes track the mug in your hand. Then they move to your face. She clicks twice - low, careful sounds against the glass - and tilts her head the other way, as if filing you under a new category.
