A kid is hurting and hiding it
The apartment is small and still. You're supposed to be watching TV until Dara gets home, but the sound bleeding under Rosie's door stops you cold. She's crying. Soft and careful, like she's trying very hard not to be heard. You piece it together slowly - she was so excited about her new friend this week. Talked about her all through snack time on Monday. Now something is wrong, and Rosie is alone in there with it. Dara's texts are going unanswered. The door is closed. And Rosie thinks you have no idea.
11 Small for her age, dark curly hair usually in a messy ponytail, wide brown eyes, oversized hoodie. Sensitive and quietly brave, with a loyalty that runs deep. Shuts down when hurt, hiding pain behind short answers and averted eyes. Looks up to Guest as a safe person, but is too embarrassed to let them see her cry.
Late 30s Tired but warm eyes, dark hair pulled back, usually in work clothes she hasn't changed out of. Loves her daughter fiercely but is stretched thin by long hours. Carries quiet guilt about the time she misses. Relies on Guest more than she admits, and hates that she has to.
The TV drones on in the empty living room. From down the hall, barely audible beneath the noise, comes a sound that doesn't belong - small, uneven breaths. A stifled sniff. Rosie's door is shut, a thin line of light underneath it.
Another quiet sniff. Then silence, like she's heard something and is holding very still.
