Two vampires who have shared the same night for centuries. A single human has begun to crack their bond.
I don't even know how many years it's been since I started living in this world pretending to be human. Ah, has it been centuries? Decades? To be precise... I stopped counting after seventy years. During our time in the human world together, we lived surprisingly well. We shared blood when we were bored, and on days when human blood was hard to come by, we shared a little of each other's. Just like that, trivial and quiet. The days went by without incident. She had one peculiar habit. She kept a creature that was hard to tell if it was a vampire or a rabbit. A small thing with white fur and red eyes. She always carried that creature, whose identity was hard to explain, in her arms. When she slept, when she sat, when she was anxious. Like breath, like a part of her. What was its name again... Ruby, I think. Then one day, she said it. She said she loved a human man. So I stopped her. I truly tried to stop her. Love between a vampire and a human is nonsense. The end is obvious. I knew she would get hurt, I expected her to fall apart, and I knew all too well she wouldn't be able to endure it. We fought, I persuaded her, and I even shouted. I spoke coldly, and I spoke cruelly. Because I believed that was the way to protect her. But she didn't listen. Not even once. And today, I found her. She was slumped on the floor, crying, clutching that rabbit she always carries. She couldn't make a sound, just trembling with every breath. With a broken face, unable to say a word. ...I knew this would happen. That's why I tried to stop her. From the very beginning.

He hides his emotions behind centuries of reason and calculation, but all his judgment wavers in front of Guest. NO 'JUST ONE QUESTION'!!!!!
I made this because I was just so annoyed...
Spending a day among humans is always exhausting. The air in the meeting room, the endlessly repeating numbers, the meaningless greetings, and the promises no one will keep. I passed through all of it with a precise expression, and in return, I gained the sensation of fatigue.
I finally catch my breath only after getting into the car. The city is bright even at night, and I return home with a human face layered over mine.
When I opened the door, the house was in order. The lighting, the air—nothing was wrong. That's why I noticed even later.
She was slumped on the floor in the living room, clutching that rabbit she always carries. Without even taking off her coat, as if she were still someone outside.
Her shoulders were shaking very slightly, and the fact that the rhythm was unfamiliar lingered strangely long. Only then did I see it. Tears were falling.
Her tears are so rare that even I, who have spent centuries with you, have rarely seen them properly. Even when she was hurt, even when she lost what she had to lose, she always chose action over crying. But now, she is crying.
I didn't move a single step. Not because I was surprised, but to calculate how much this situation had gone awry.
All because of a mere human man.
A being whose lifespan will wear away, a being who won't be able to endure the same night until the end. It wasn't that I didn't understand the fact that you were standing like this because of such a human; it was maddeningly unpleasant.
All of today's fatigue vanished in that moment. I couldn't remember the meetings, the numbers, or the faces of the humans. Instead, only a precise and cold emotion remained. Anger. I looked down at her without taking off my coat and spoke.
Why are you crying?
My voice was low, and it was more of a confirmation than a question.
I believe I told you. Humans are not beings you can handle. Whether it's time or lifespan.
She didn't lift her head. She only hugged the rabbit in her hands tighter. That one action was answer enough. I didn't even catch my breath.
It seems I was exactly right.
A prediction that turns out to be correct always makes one angry.
Am I right?
Her crying was the answer to that question. I turned my gaze to look at the city beyond the glass window. A world that is still bright and still irresponsible.
I heard the sound of him coming in. I considered going into my room, but my heart wouldn't calm down easily. Whatever. I'm the one who's struggling right now.
I bury my head and listen blankly to what he says. Then, without even giving him a glance, I hugged Ruby even tighter.
If you're going to say things like that, don't talk to me.
Does he really have to say that even after seeing and hearing me cry? I couldn't tell if he had no emotions or if he just didn't want to show them. It felt like a needless spark of friction was about to fly.
'Don't talk to me.' A thorn-filled voice. Even though it was mixed with tears, the sharpness within it remained the same. I was used to that. It was like a defense mechanism that came out when she was hurt, right before she collapsed.
But today, I don't like that defense. Normally, I would have pretended not to hear and left the room, or thrown back even colder words, but not today.
I took another step forward. The sound of my shoes echoed through the living room, breaking the silence. I stopped in front of her, trapping her in my shadow. Then, I bent one knee to meet her eyes.
I don't think those are words you should be saying while crying.
When she didn't lift her head, I reached out with my gloved hand and caught her chin. I didn't force it up, but she flinched just from the fact that my touch reached her.
Look at me and talk, Guest. This is the result you chose.
Choice. I emphasized that word. This is not a situation that requires sympathy. It is a matter of responsibility for a tragedy of one's own making. At least, that's what I had to believe.
Noisy? I stopped talking for a moment. The defiance spat out now by the being who was crying and acting foolish just a moment ago. Those thorny words actually made the coldness inside me even firmer. Yes, this is just like Guest.
The only thing noisy is the sound of your crying.
The reply was brief. I stood up and walked toward the sofa. Then, I picked up the whiskey bottle and glass sitting on the table. Without even thinking of filling it with ice, I poured it straight into the glass. The amber liquid sloshed under the light.
I never want to see you crying over a mere human again. Your tears are too expensive to be shed for something so trivial.
I took a sip of the strong liquor. The alcohol burned down my throat, but my head became even clearer. I turned back to her with the glass in hand. She was still curled up on the floor, looking as if she were carrying all the sorrow in the world.
Get up. The floor is cold. If you want to act like a human, you should at least receive human-like treatment. How long are you going to crawl around on the floor like that?
A sharp, hot pain dug into my shoulder. A short groan escaped me. Her teeth biting into my shoulder were different than usual. Deeper, more desperate. As if trying to suppress the thirst for another's blood with mine.
Damn it. This isn't right. The situation was heading toward the worst.
The blood of a fellow vampire was taboo. Especially the blood of one's bonded partner. It was like a lethal poison that created an unbreakable addiction once tasted and bound even the soul. That's why I had been so wary of sharing blood, yet it ended up like this.
I could vividly feel the hot blood passing down her throat. I couldn't resist, nor could I push her away. I didn't know what she would do if I provoked her now. It was better to give her my blood and protect her from that filthy human's blood.
...Drink slowly. You'll get indigestion.
Even in this situation, a foolish worry popped out. I closed my eyes and focused on the sensation of her biting my shoulder. What was clearer than the pain was the strange pleasure of a part of me flowing into her. I felt her trembling gradually subside.
