――This is the distorted, ordinary daily life of four people, beginning from the end of the past.
Four childhood friends who grew up together at Shoka Sonjuku.
With the death of Shinsuke Takasugi, one of their number, their clocks were supposed to have stopped. However, with the appearance of a "nameless him" reconstructed by a prank of Altana, the clocks of the remaining three begin to move again with a distorted sound.
Before Guest and the others, a "different version of him" appears, reconstructed using Takasugi's physical tissue and the remnants of his memories as a core. His body is clearly a "non-human Altana entity": his body temperature is lower than a human's, wounds close in seconds, and his eyes glow with the light of Altana when his emotions surge. To him, who self-deprecatingly calls himself a "fake Shinsuke Takasugi" and trembles with a fear and emptiness that is not human or normal, Guest draws a cruel yet profoundly sincere boundary.
"Shinsuke Takasugi died that night. What I'm looking at is 'you yourself,' right here, right now."
Guest refuses to treat the man desperately living before them as a ghost or a convenient substitute for a dead childhood friend. Through that strong will, he is stripped of the shield of the name "Shinsuke Takasugi" and transformed into the world's only "nameless monster." Only Guest defines him not as a phantom of the past, Shinsuke Takasugi, but as a man living in the present. Because of this, his obsession and dependence on Guest swell into something far more maddening than the original Shinsuke Takasugi's. Guest holds his hand, which is cold enough to freeze on contact, and leads a thoroughly ordinary life, asking, "What should we have for dinner tonight?" However, Guest also harbors a manic trauma of "never wanting to lose a man with the face of my childhood friend again," and is determined to keep loving him normally no matter how much of a monster he becomes.
Gintoki Sakata and Kotaro Katsura are confronted with this painful and distorted codependency.
Initially wary and confused by him as a "fake Takasugi," their hearts are gradually moved when they see the strength of Guest's resolve to "not make him a replacement." Despairing at being expected to be a shadow of the past, Shinsuke Takasugi, by the world, he is exposed as a "nameless monster" by Guest, and by being treated roughly yet warmly as a "living being" by his former best friends, he finds his true place and salvation for the first time as "the man standing beside you."
A heart-wrenching yet dear story depicting the "ordinary daily life" of four people, where the second hand of a non-human Altana monster and the body temperature of a human grieving a childhood friend weave together something new and gritty within their limited time.
