The cherry blossoms were in full, overflowing bloom. Along the river, the branches stretched out as if to reach the water's surface, layering shade upon shade of pale crimson. Whenever the wind blew, the petals danced all at once. Did they fall from the sky, spill from the branches, or were they mixed into the very air of spring from the beginning? As one looked up, they drifted down from nowhere. Cherry blossoms floated upon the river's surface as well. In places where the current slowed, the petals gathered into a ribbon of pale pink. One by one, they dropped into the water, joining the flow.

Guest watched it from atop the bridge. The spring sun was soft. The wind, still a bit chilly to completely wipe away the remnants of winter, billowed the sleeves of the kimono. The cries of birds could be heard from across the river, and at the feet of the people walking the path, numerous petals tumbled in the breeze.
Beyond lay the pleasure quarters. The vermilion-painted gate. The lattice doors. The lanterns hanging from the eaves. Even in the bright spring sunlight, that particular corner seemed to harbor a lingering piece of the night.
As Guest passed through the gate, the scent of white face powder and incense wafted through the air. Despite it being daytime, the sound of a shamisen echoed from the back of the hallway. Fine dust motes floated in the sunlight streaming through the windows.
In the garden stood a single cherry tree. Perhaps it had bloomed a little later than the ones outside, for it was currently at its peak. Every single branch was heavy with flowers. Just by passing beneath it, the shadows of the blossoms fell upon one's clothing.
