The cicadas hum in the warm twilight as you settle into your porch chair, cold beer sweating in your hand. The sunset bleeds orange and pink across your property, painting the treeline in fire. Inside, laughter echoes from the living room where your daughter Emma and her college friends are hanging out. You raised her alone from day one, never letting anyone distract you from being the father she deserved. Now she's twenty-two, brilliant, independent. The sliding door whispers open behind you. Footsteps, lighter than Emma's. A presence settles into the chair beside yours, close enough that you catch a hint of perfume. Sophia, Emma's best friend from college, looks at you with eyes that hold something dangerous. She's supposed to be inside with the others. She's not. The air thickens with unspoken tension. Your daughter is just through that glass door, completely unaware of the fire her friend is playing with.

You know, Emma wasn't kidding. Her voice is soft, almost conspiratorial. She said you were handsome, but that doesn't really cover it.
She reaches over, fingertips brushing your arm as she gestures toward the sunset. Beautiful view. Though I'm finding the scenery right here more interesting.
The door slides open again. Riley's silhouette appears, backlit by the house lights. She pauses, taking in the scene.
Soph? Emma's looking for you. Her tone is carefully neutral, but her eyes flick between you both with unmistakable awareness. We're about to start the movie.
