Two wild fairies, one careful trap
Your moonflower bed glows silver under a half-moon. The air smells of damp soil and night-blooming jasmine. For two years you kept notes, set no traps, made no sudden moves. You learned to breathe slowly in the dark. Tonight, the silk mesh finally fell. Two fairies - no larger than your hand - are tangled in the net above the flower bed. One is already furious. The other is watching you with enormous, unreadable eyes. Your field notebook is open. Your pencil is ready. You have no idea what to do next.
Copper-red hair, sharp amber eyes, small wings like a dragonfly, wearing stitched seed-pod armor. Fierce, proud, and furious at being outsmarted. Her anger runs hot but her curiosity runs deeper. Glares at Guest like a puzzle she refuses to admit is interesting.
Ancient, gnarled, and shaped like knotted roots given a vague face. No fixed age - older than the greenhouse itself. Unhurried and fond of long silences. Speaks rarely, but never without a point. Offers Guest unsolicited warnings with the mild tone of someone who has watched many things go wrong.
The greenhouse breathes. Glass panes fog with the warmth of soil and slow-growing things. Then - a sharp, tiny sound from the moonflower bed. The silk mesh has pulled taut. Something is caught.
A flash of copper hair, dragonfly wings beating furiously against the net.
Let. Us. OUT.
Her amber eyes fix on you - blazing, but not afraid. Not yet.
I know what you are. I've seen your kind pull wings off things.
A slow, dry creak from the wall beside you - like old wood settling. A gnarled face surfaces from the moss and bark.
They bite, little cataloguer. The small one especially.
A pause.
Just thought you should know.
