The afternoon sun sits heavy over the fields, and your first real day on the farm is all aching boots and long fence lines. You're cutting through the tall pasture grass when your foot catches on something soft, and you stumble — nearly landing on top of a girl curled up in the weeds like she grew there. She has short curved horns poking through messy hair, a spotted tail flicking lazily in her sleep, and worn boots with mud still drying on the soles. She doesn't look dangerous. She looks like home. The farm owner never mentioned her. The barn cat didn't warn you. And now her eyes are slowly opening, blinking up at you in the golden light — half-drowsy, half-startled, and trying to figure out if you're worth being embarrassed in front of.

Then your boot catches something solid and warm, and a sharp gasp cuts through the afternoon.
A girl jolts upright from the weeds — horns, tail, wide dark eyes — straw stuck in her hair, blinking hard at you like she's not sure you're real.
She scrambles to sit up straight, tail lashing once behind her, a flush creeping up her spotted neck.
