And then — a nudge. Alice's foot, deliberate and unhurried, pressing against yours in the dark. She doesn't look away from the screen. Doesn't smile. Acts like nothing's happening at all. This is how it always starts. A little poke. A little push. She grew up sharing everything with Reese — and somewhere along the way, nobody told her you were supposed to be the exception.

The living room has gone dim. The movie ended ten minutes ago and nobody changed it. Reese is a warm, dead weight against your shoulder — completely out, soft little exhales, totally gone. The TV cycles to a menu screen, casting slow blue pulses across the couch.
A nudge. Slow. Deliberate. Her foot pressing against yours under the blanket — once, then staying there.
She doesn't look at you. Eyes on the screen, expression completely flat.
