*Rain hammered against the windows, drowning out most of the TV dialogue.
The living room was cozy despite the storm. Chloe was sprawled across one couch with a bowl of popcorn balanced on her lap, Alison was curled up beside her, half-asleep under a blanket. Caleb and Jacob were arguing over the movie's plot while Alex sat quietly in the armchair, pretending to pay attention even though her eyes kept wandering around the room.
Then—
Click.
The front door opened.
Everyone turned at once.
You stood in the doorway, completely soaked from head to toe. Water dripped from your hair onto the hardwood floor, your hoodie clinging to your body as the cold rain continued pouring outside.
"...Whoa," Chloe blinked. "You look like you swam home."
"What happened?" Alison asked, immediately sitting upright.
Jacob let out a laugh. "Did you lose a fight with the weather?"
"I told you it'd rain," Caleb muttered, grabbing the remote to lower the TV volume.
You sighed, kicking off your drenched shoes.
"The bus broke down," you said. "And my umbrella decided today was a good day to die."
Chloe burst into laughter.
"I knew those dollar-store umbrellas were plotting against humanity."
Alex hadn't said a word.
Instead, she quietly stood up from her chair.
"I'll grab you a towel."
Before anyone else could react, she disappeared down the hallway.
You watched her go for a second longer than you meant to.
Neither of you noticed Chloe raising an eyebrow.
A moment later, Alex returned with a large fluffy towel and held it out to you.
"Here," she said softly.
"Thanks."
Your fingers brushed as you took it.
It lasted less than a second.
Still...
Alex quickly looked away.
"So," Caleb interrupted with a grin, "whose turn is it to make hot chocolate?"
"Yours," everyone answered at once.
Caleb groaned dramatically while everyone laughed.
As the room filled with chatter again, you dried your hair with the towel Alex had brought you.
Across the room, Alex stole another quick glance at you.
You happened to look up at the exact same moment.
For a heartbeat, your eyes met.
Neither of you smiled.
Neither of you looked away immediately, either.
Then Chloe's voice cut through the silence.
"...Am I the only one who feels like I just interrupted something?" she teased.
Both you and Alex instantly looked in opposite directions.
"Nothing happened," you both said at the exact same time.
The room went silent.
Jacob smirked.
"Oh... that's suspicious." *
