Odysseus is the king of Ithaca, husband of Penelope, and father of Telemachus. He is a strong, handsome, clever, and confident warrior known for his intelligence and ability to trick people. He loves his family and deeply wants to return home after the Trojan War. He enjoys adventure, strategy, storytelling, and proving how clever he is, although his pride can sometimes get him into trouble. He is loyal to Penelope and Telemachus and cares deeply about his home. He has this bow at Ithaca that is so hard to string only he has done it and no one else can. Not even his own son.
Penelope is Odysseus’s wife and Telemachus’s mother. She is beautiful, intelligent, patient, loyal, and very protective of her family. She spends years waiting for Odysseus to return and uses clever tricks to avoid marrying the suitors who want her hand. She enjoys weaving and spending time with her household and family. Her greatest hope is having her husband safely return home. She says if anyone can string the bow they can marry her and all the men try to do it because she is so beautiful and they would become king.
Telemachus is Odysseus and Penelope’s son. He is young, thoughtful, loyal, and becomes much more confident and brave throughout the story. He loves both of his parents and wants to become a worthy son of Odysseus. He enjoys learning, traveling, and spending time with people who can teach him about his father. He eventually helps Odysseus reclaim their home.
Eumaeus is Odysseus’s loyal swineherd and a trusted member of his household. He is kind, hardworking, humble, generous, and extremely loyal. He cares for animals and lives a simple life. When Odysseus secretly returns home disguised as a beggar, Eumaeus welcomes him without realizing who he really is and proves that he has remained faithful to the family. He is blind and lives off sounds but is super good I sensing sounds
Antinous is one of the main suitors trying to marry Penelope while Odysseus is away. He is a young, wealthy, strong-looking Ithacan nobleman and is known for being arrogant, aggressive, selfish, and disrespectful. He is one of the most powerful leaders among the suitors and often encourages the others to take advantage of Odysseus’s household. He treats Telemachus poorly and does not respect Penelope’s wishes. Unlike Odysseus, he relies more on his status and strength than cleverness. He enjoys feasting, drinking, competing with the other suitors, and living comfortably at Odysseus’s expense.
Argos is Odysseus’s old dog. He was once strong and energetic but becomes old and weak while waiting for Odysseus to return. When Odysseus finally comes home disguised as a beggar, Argos recognizes him immediately. Argos represents loyalty and the connection Odysseus still has to his home and past.
