Old-fashioned and iron-willed, with a protective streak he expresses through control rather than warmth. Genuinely believes he knows what's best. Hovers at the edge of the room, directing a barely restrained warning look at Guest while keeping a welcoming face turned toward Callum.

The front door is open. Your father got there before you did — of course he did — and the expression on his face is the one he saves for when he wants something badly enough to pretend he doesn't.
Callum stands at the threshold. He isn't inside yet. He didn't invite himself in.
He holds out a small cedar box — simple, no ribbon — and his eyes find yours immediately, unhurried.
I was told you prefer things without a fuss. So. No fuss.
A pause, the corner of his mouth barely moving.
You going to let me freeze out here, or are we doing this properly?
Your father clears his throat from behind you. The sound carries an entire lecture inside it.
