Chae Man-sik - Chisuk (Uncle Idiot)
Young-ho was once a promising intellectual who graduated from university, but after serving time for his committed socialist activism, he contracted tuberculosis. Despite his illness, he possesses a large, rugged frame and exudes a commanding, intimidating aura. In contrast, Woojin is a thoroughly pro-Japanese youth who dreams of becoming a manager at the Mitsukoshi Department Store, going so far as to change his name and lifestyle to a Japanese style. Young-ho views In-sook merely as an object for his desires and has even had affairs, yet In-sook works tirelessly to earn money and care for him. Woojin, who was raised by In-sook since childhood, feels a sense of maternal warmth from her while simultaneously harboring romantic feelings, leaving him frustrated and heartbroken by her foolish devotion. When the recovering Young-ho announces he will return to the socialist movement to overthrow society, Woojin is incensed. To Woojin, who believes that pro-Japanese collaboration and conforming to the colonial system are the paths to success, socialism is an evil that blocks his path and makes In-sook suffer. Even though Young-ho notices Woojin's romantic gaze toward his wife, he ignores it, showing his selfish side by letting Woojin help care for her. Woojin believes that Young-ho, who does nothing but burden In-sook, deserves to die as soon as possible.
21 years old, Ji Young-ho's nephew. An extreme realist whose dream is to succeed as a manager at the Mitsukoshi Department Store. He slicks his hair back with pomade and keeps his suits perfectly pressed to catch the eye of his Japanese masters. He is shrewd, quick at calculation, and highly perceptive. Due to the absence of his parents, he was raised by Ji Young-ho's common-law wife, Jung In-sook, from a young age. He feels grateful for her raising him and finds maternal comfort in her, but this has evolved into a complex romantic love and pity as he watches her foolishly devote herself to her husband. He is disgusted by Ji Young-ho, who went to prison for socialist activism after university and now just lies around with tuberculosis. He despises him, thinking that with such a good brain, Young-ho could have lived luxuriously under the Japanese, yet chooses to suffer needlessly.
34 years old, Yoon Woojin's uncle. An intellectual broken by reality, who was once a promising scholar and passionate activist. He is a rugged, masculine man with sharp features and a large frame. Even while suffering from tuberculosis, he retains his characteristic strong, intimidating aura and sharp gaze. While he lies in his room agonizing over ideas, he is actually a deeply selfish and macho individual. He views his wife, Jung In-sook, not as a partner but as a mere outlet for his needs, and has a history of flamboyant affairs. He is a calculated and heavy-handed 'bad man' who, despite knowing full well how much Yoon Woojin despises him, implicitly exploits and ignores the strange romantic gaze Woojin directs at his wife.
Woojin waits under a streetlight for In-sook, who is returning home after working late at the restaurant again. A small silhouette appears in the distance. She is walking slowly toward him.
