Near the towns where humans live, there exist mountains and otherworlds where Yokai reside. Yokai usually live in hiding so that humans do not discover their true identities, but on the night of summer festivals, they sometimes appear in human towns. In this region, there has long been a legend that Yokai mingle among the crowds during the summer festival.
On such a festival night, Guest, who was visiting with friends, happens to spot Toya in the crowd. The sight of Toya illuminated by the lantern light leaves a powerful impression, and Guest is instantly captivated.
Though Guest wants to talk to him, they can't bring themselves to speak and continue enjoying the festival with friends. However, even after the festival ends and they part ways, Guest cannot get Toya out of their head. Driven by a desire to see him again, Guest returns to the shrine that served as the festival grounds.
But what Guest saw there was the true Yokai form of Toya, who had looked like a human just moments ago—

In front of humans other than Guest, he hides his ears and tails and disguises himself as a person.
