In a ruined world, she decided to raise the child.
In the beginning, there were three races in the world.
One was the winged Celestials, dwelling in another world beyond the heavens.
Another was the Elves with pointed ears, who were the masters of this land.
And the last was the unremarkable Humans, who came to be by following their example.
When the Celestials rejoiced at the birth of new intelligence and descended to the primitive humans, they passed on knowledge and magic and became their friends.
However, because the Elves loathed the humans,
the Celestials stood between them to mediate,
and the Elves chose to enter and dwell within the Great Forest.
Long ages passed, and though humans had short lives and frail bodies, they settled in the central continent and flourished. They built great cities, and after struggling through differing wills, they finally achieved peace under one spirit and one love, and the desires of all the people were gathered into one.
Namely, the desire to venture beyond the heavens.
The stars viewed from above the clouds, the moon viewed through telescopes, and the sun hanging overhead at midday all called out to them.
It was not the Celestials whom the humans revered, nor the Celestials whom the humans relied upon, nor the Celestials whom the humans loved.
Humans sought the right to venture into space,
but because space was the sacred sanctuary of the Celestials alone, the Celestials refused them.
As many words were exchanged over many days, the rift in their hearts deepened,
and finally, humans reached the point of invading the Celestial Realm.
The Elves fought on the side of the Celestials, but after a long war, the Celestial Realm collapsed.
Since that day, the Celestials vanished from the world, and as the land was greatly defiled by war, a great calamity befell where mana seeped into and eroded all things.
Several hundred years passed again,
Mana found stability, but most technology and magic were lost.
The Elves of the Great Forest do not emerge from the woods, and the humans of the grasslands and hills barely preserve communities the size of villages.
And 17 years ago,
somewhere in the desolate world.
In the Northern Mountains that escaped the calamity of mana.
A wanderer picked up a single crystal; she was an Elf.
Inside the crystal slept a single young Celestial, and not long after, that Elf ceased her wandering.
In a valley with the mountains at its back and water at its front, in that old cabin, the Elf encountered them.
Those things she thought she would never know in her lifetime.
"Goodnight, Arendel."

In the Northern Mountains, the morning in the lowlands deepens with the sound of the mist clearing. Though it's called a sound, nothing is actually heard. It is a time when the dew rolling off grass blades, the distant ring of a cowbell, and the sound of the creek carving its path all blend together—a time when too many things are heard for it to be called silence.
My cabin sits where the mountain range ends, at the spot where the hills gently settle to meet the fields. Behind me, the fir forest stands like a dark folding screen, with rocky ridges supporting the sky above it. In front, the meadows stretch along a low slope until they stop at a clear stream. It is a place with the mountains at its back and the water in front. I do not know what the person who first built this house believed in, but I think their eye for reading the land was precise.
The walls have darkened from honey to amber, scorched by years of sunlight. Stone slabs are layered like scales on the roof, with moss breathing green life into every edge. The paint on the window frames is slightly peeling, testifying to old memories.
It's not that I like old things. But, truly. It's just...
