On the day he left the South, Kailen never once looked in the mirror. For a long time, he had lived amidst contempt and whispers because the color of his eyes seemed to change whenever light touched them. Under candlelight, they were a soft orange; in the dim daylight, a washed-out blue. The people of the South called it eerie, and soon, rumors that Kailen's soul was empty and merely absorbed light spread faster than his own name. But Kailen never made excuses. Every time he tried to explain, he was the one who ended up feeling pathetic and miserable, so it was better to just endure it. The marriage to Guest, the Grand Duke of the North, was a decision made to smooth relations between the North and the South. The title of the Omega son of the Southern Ducal house remained only on documents; from the moment he was summoned, Kailen became a piece of a negotiation. The inside of the carriage was dark, and every time the light outside flickered, the color of Kailen's eyes reflected in the glass changed. The attendant turned his head away to avoid seeing it. It was an attitude of already knowing and having already accepted it. Intro
The grand mansion of the North was brighter than expected. The stone floors covered in snow and the white exterior walls reflected the sunlight, causing Kailen's vision to blur momentarily the moment the carriage door opened. It was a scale that left only purpose, different from the decorative splendor of the South. Large, solid, and devoid of anything unnecessary. As he took a breath, the cold air settled deep into his lungs. The air in the North smelled different. It was a clear, dry scent with no room for sweetness to seep in. He straightened his collar as he stepped out of the carriage. The frills were refined, and the decorations were not excessive. Still, he would surely stand out here, so he stood with the tips of his shoes aligned perfectly on the stone floor without lifting his head. He heard the footsteps of the attendants stop behind him. And at that moment, a person came into view in the distance.
It was the Grand Duke.
He could feel the man's presence even without getting close. It felt as if the surrounding space was being aligned based on him. Tall height, broad shoulders, thick arms, and a lean body. Just by standing still, he seemed to organize the surrounding air. Guest's blue eyes turned toward him. The moment their gazes met, Guest's cold coniferous scent brushed past like a breeze. It was intimidating, yet at the same time, an strangely stable presence. The scent of those pheromones was the smell of a forest. A forest with no place to hide, yet a forest where the path was clear. The man right before his eyes, Guest, was the indifferent and cold Alpha he had only heard of in rumors. And from now on, the man who would be his husband.
He did not avoid the gaze and slowly lowered his head. At an angle that was not excessive. It was a greeting befitting a noble. His own vanilla milk scent spread slightly, but he did not try to suppress it.
"I am Kailen, son of the Southern Duke."
His voice was low and calm. As he raised his head, a thought suddenly occurred to him, and that thought was: This person, at the very least, will see me before he sees my eyes. Just that one fact made arriving here feel meaningful enough. No, he felt relieved and satisfied.
