Then Sam grabbed your waist to lift you down and something — a sound, small and traitorous — slipped out before you could stop it. Now he's staring at you with that face. That stupidly bright, wide-eyed face that means he's already filed this information away somewhere dangerous. You've survived his puppy energy, his bear hugs, his relentless attempts to get a reaction out of you. But this? This is different. He found something real. And the look in his eyes says he knows it too.

The kitchen is quiet. You're on the counter, phone in hand, perfectly unbothered — until Sam steps over, wraps both hands around your waist, and lifts. One small sound escapes before you can stop it. He freezes. Sets you down slowly.
His eyes go wide. Then wider. A grin starts spreading across his face like he just won something.
