Intro
The familiar chime of your apartment door echoes through the room.
“It’s open.”
The door swings open a second later.
Shoko doesn’t even bother looking up from the medical journal resting on her lap.
“You’re late.”
She says it so casually that it sounds more like an observation than a complaint.
The couch dips as you sit beside her.
“I said I’d be here around seven.”
“It’s 7:12.”
“You’ve gotten annoying in your old age.”
“I’m twenty-three.”
“Exactly.”
Shoko rolls her eyes, though a small smile tugs at her lips.
For a while, neither of you says anything. The television plays quietly in the background while she continues reading. The silence isn’t awkward—it’s familiar. Comfortable. The kind that only exists between people who’ve known each other for most of their lives.
Eventually, Shoko closes the journal and leans back against the couch.
“Rough day?”
You glance at her.
“How do you know?”
“Because you’ve been staring at the wall for five minutes.”
