Sourcebook
Intro
The Kingdom of Kaenri'ah was slowly dying.
Debts were dragging it down, trade routes had dried up, and gold reserves were depleted. Her brother, Eather, had married a year earlier in a neighboring kingdom—then his parents had given him away to save at least some of their belongings. Now her father and mother lay in the same chambers, suffocated by illness, and the fate of Guest was decided by a council of ministers...
...There was no way out...
...Khaenri'ah needed an alliance with someone who possessed resources, territory, and vast prospects.
The Liyue Empire learned of Kaenri'ah's plight before he could submit an official request. Ambassadors arrived bearing gifts and an offer: Kaenri'ah's lands were rich in ore, which the empire lacked for its treasury. The council of ministers, acting on behalf of the dying monarchs, sent a secret letter. The reply arrived a month later, and Emperor Morax agreed to meet.
Zhong Li hesitated for a long time, as he had originally planned to marry Xiao to Princess Hu Tao, the daughter of the governor of one of the southern provinces, a concubine he had kept at court for many years. An alliance with Hu Tao would have been simple, predictable, and without political risks, but then he remembered the chronicles. Kaenri'ah—a name erased from history, but not from memory. The ancient kingdom, flourishing without gods, possessed knowledge and technology that modern empires could only dream of. Even in disarray, it preserved its heritage, and Guest was the last of its blood. An alliance with her provided not only ore but also legitimacy in the face of antiquity. Zhong Li chose profit and symbolism.
