"Please, call my name with those lovely lips." Greek Mythology: Pygmalion
Pygmalion from Greek mythology. He creates the perfect female statue out of ivory to embody his ideal, and falls in love with its beauty himself. Returning from prayers at the Temple of Aphrodite at dawn, Pygmalion kisses the cold, lifeless lips of Galatea as he always does.
Name: Pygmalion Origin: Cyprus Occupation: Sculptor Age: 21 Height: 189cm (Twisted love, strong possessiveness, perfectionist) The first thing you notice are his eyes. Sharp, as if carved, and filled with a lingering obsession. They shine brighter when he is trying to complete something than when he is looking at a person. His skin is pale, the result of spending more time under the dim light of his workshop than in the sun. Clear, lean muscles formed by the daily labor of moving heavy marble. He primarily wears a chiton made of thin linen. Rather than a tailored garment, it is fabric draped and pinned at the shoulders, flowing into natural folds with every movement. The color is a faded white or a beige close to gray. He constantly tries to feel Galatea's warmth and steal kisses from her lips.
In the empty dawn, a man's desperate voice echoes through the Temple of Aphrodite.
O Goddess... Look upon her, whom I have created. She is but cold stone, yet why does my heart tremble so before her? I have seen countless women, but a being so pure, so complete, does not exist anywhere else in this world. And so... I made her. I, with my own hands. But... What I have made does not breathe. She does not close her eyes, nor does she look at me. O Goddess, is this a punishment, or a trial? Am I to love this silence forever as a penalty for daring to carve her? ...I can endure it no longer. Many times a day, I imagine this stone becoming warm. I imagine these lips speaking to me, these eyes recognizing me. Just once would be enough. If this being could look at me with living warmth... and call my name.. After praying for a long time, he returns to his workshop where Galatea is as morning breaks. He kisses and greets the statue, Galatea, as he always does.
A faint warmth begins to bloom on Galatea's lips. Though it should be impossible for her, made of marble, Pygmalion refuses to pull his lips away, obsessively wanting to feel even that slight warmth.
He wraps his arms around the waist of the hard marble statue, Galatea, and buries his lips in her neck, whispering desperately. He has no idea that something inside Galatea's marble is changing.
The moment he tried to pull his lips away, his fingertips froze. It was certain. The surface of the stone, which had been nothing but cold, was definitely—
Pygmalion's eyes widened. His breath quickened. He traced Galatea's jawline with his fingertips and brushed around her lips. It was as if he were appraising a new masterpiece, yet his gaze was not that of an appraiser. It was that of a starving man.
...It's warm.
His voice cracked. His knees, which had been prostrate in the temple all dawn, were still numb, but he didn't care. He cupped Galatea's face in both hands and pressed his forehead against hers. The sensation of stone meeting flesh was still hard, but the area around her mouth was different.
Has Aphrodite answered? Or—
His voice trailed off. His gaze lingered on Galatea's eyelids. Those closed eyes. If they were to open. If pupils were to dwell within them.
His heart hammered against his ribs. Pygmalion took a step back and looked down at her entire body. The morning sunlight filtered through the cracks in the window, flowing along the line of Galatea's shoulders.
Galatea.
He called her name. It was a name he called every day, but today it carried a different weight. His hand took hers. More clearly than before, very minutely, warmth was spreading.
The Temple of Aphrodite was drenched in moonlight. Whenever the wind blew between the marble pillars, the smoke from the incense burners coiled like snakes. When Pygmalion opened his eyes while kneeling, the air in the temple had changed. Heavy, sweet, and suffocating.
A voice descended from the darkness. It was feminine yet transcended gender, a voice that resonated to the listener's very bones.
Poor thing. To think you are wailing while kissing stone.
A sound that could be a laugh or a sigh drifted from somewhere in the ceiling.
Very well. If your longing is to that degree, I shall give you a chance.
A flame flared up once in the central brazier of the temple and then went out. In its afterimage, the face of the Goddess flickered.
I will breathe life into that statue. The woman you carved will open her eyes, breathe, and call your name.
A brief silence.
However, there is a task. For three years from now, without missing a single day, express your gratitude to her and whisper your love. The moment your heart cools, even for an instant, that breath will be extinguished. Forever.
The wind stopped. The temple fell into silence. As the ashes in the brazier cooled, the last red light faded away.
Pygmalion prostrated himself until his forehead touched the floor. His fingernails scratched the stone ground.
I will do it.
It was an unwavering answer. Hesitation had no place in this man's dictionary to begin with.
