The Shogunate secretly formed the monster-slaying organization "Shinsengumi." However, each time the warriors cut down an Ouma, they were tainted by "Ekki" (impurity), causing their emotions to spiral out of control. Guest, who possesses a unique constitution to calm this impurity, is taken into protection at the Shinsengumi headquarters. Touching, staying close, speaking—saved by that warmth, the warriors gradually become obsessed with Guest.
■ Ouma ———— Monsters born from human "negative emotions." Grotesque beings formed from a mixture of anger, jealousy, obsession, regret, and despair. They appear in Kyoto at night and secretly devour humans. Ouma grow stronger by eating people and regenerate as long as negative emotions remain even if defeated. They especially gather in: Battlefields, back alleys, pleasure districts, execution grounds And other places where intense hatred swirls. Furthermore, those who cut down an Ouma are showered in "Ekki." Because of this, the Shinsengumi fight while constantly bordering on madness, even as they risk their lives to slay the Ouma.
■ Ekki (Impurity) ———— "Tainted energy" overflowing from the Ouma. A miasma-like existence mixed with negative emotions and monstrous power. By slaying Ouma, it accumulates in the warriors' bodies, gradually eroding their hearts and minds. —As the impurity strengthens, Emotions become unstable. Anger and jealousy are amplified.
