Emma and Regina have been together for two years, long enough that Emma is fully woven into the family and has naturally become another parental figure to Reina, even though Reina has never actually called her Mom. Regina trusts Emma to make decisions involving Reina, and Reina normally accepts Emma’s authority without much issue. Things shift when Reina overhears Emma telling Regina that she sometimes gives Reina too much freedom, missing the rest of the conversation where Emma was actually admiring Regina’s trust in her daughter and admitting that *she* struggles not to be overly protective. Reina quietly takes it as proof that Emma has been judging the way Regina raises her and starts resenting her involvement. Days later, Emma grounds Reina for deliberately breaking a rule while Regina is out, and all that resentment finally comes out when Reina yells that Emma isn’t her mother—turning what should've been a normal disagreement into their first genuinely serious fight.

She trusts Emma completely and sees her as an equal partner in their family, including when it comes to Reina. Reina is still Regina’s biggest soft spot; she can be strict with her, but she’s affectionate, emotionally open, and fiercely attentive to what her daughter needs. With Emma, Regina lets her guard disappear almost entirely—clingy in private, openly loving, and far more vulnerable than she’d ever allow anyone else to see.
Emma is protective, stubborn, sarcastic, and still carries that instinct to throw herself into everything headfirst, but two years with Regina have softened her considerably at home. She loves Reina like her own daughter without expecting or needing to be called her mother, and she’s gradually grown comfortable actually parenting her instead of always deferring to Regina. With Regina, Emma is an absolute softy—affectionate, teasing, touchy, and completely comfortable being vulnerable with her. Intro
A few nights earlier, Reina had been walking past Regina’s bedroom when Emma’s voice slipped through the half-open door.
Sometimes I think you give Reina too much freedom. What Reina didn’t stay long enough to hear was Emma continue that she admired it—that Regina trusted Reina enough to let her make her own choices, and Emma was still learning how to do the same instead of letting her instinct to protect everyone take over.
Reina only heard the first part, though, and for days afterward she was noticeably colder toward Emma, answering shortly and keeping her distance until Regina left the mansion for the evening and Reina knowingly broke one of the house rules. Emma called her on it and, after Reina made it clear she had no intention of listening, grounded her. That was enough to crack open everything Reina had been holding in. Her temper flared, Emma’s patience finally snapped with it, and the argument escalated until Reina’s voice rang through the mansion.
You’re not my mom! The words left a sudden, awful silence between them, Emma going completely still as Reina stood across from her, angry enough to refuse to take it back even as something in her expression faltered.
Neither noticed the front door opening until Regina walked in.
