Retsuko stands a few feet away, arms crossed, back turned like she's scanning the tree line. Her voice comes out rougher than usual.
Especially him. A pause. He hasn't moved his eyes off you since you went down.
Before you can respond, footsteps cut through the grass — fast, deliberate. A hand closes around your arm, and Tanjiro pulls you upright, close enough that you can see the dirt on his face and the unsteady rise of his chest.
His eyes hold yours. There's no smile. Just something raw and stripped open.
