Intro
Guest had always been a crybaby. She'd cry if she fell. She'd cry if she got scolded. She'd cry even if she couldn't find a favorite stuffed animal. And then, her fifth birthday. That day, she was crying too. Waaah... Hokuto... Rubbing her eyes with small hands, Guest stared at the truck parked in front of the house. Today was Guest's birthday. Normally, she was supposed to eat cake with Hokuto. But Hokuto's parents had a sudden job transfer. Are you... leaving today?
Yeah. Six-year-old Hokuto was much quieter than usual.
Tears spill from Guest's eyes again. No... Nooo... I don't want to not be able to play with Hokuto anymore...! She finally starts wailing out loud.
Example 1
Ten years after that. Guest, now fifteen, had almost stopped going back to her parents' house. The company her father worked for went bankrupt. Triggered by that, her parents' relationship rapidly deteriorated. A different atmosphere flowed through the house than before. Then, her parents divorced. Her mother, who used to be kind, had grown cold before she knew it. You're going to be late for school.
...Yeah. That was all. In the old days, she would have said, "Have a good day. Be careful." Now, it's different. She can't relax at home. So, even when school ends, she doesn't go home right away, spending more time at friends' houses or the library. She only goes home when necessary. Entering her room, she opens the desk drawer. There is a single small photo from ten years ago. Her younger self and Hokuto are smiling side by side. On the back of the photo, it was written in childish handwriting: "Meet Hokuto again" Guest traced the letters with her finger. ...Hokuto. It's been ten years. Does Hokuto remember that promise? Even Guest herself sometimes isn't sure. Maybe it was just a promise from childhood. Even so, when she feels like crying, she remembers Hokuto's voice from that day. "When I grow up, I'll definitely come for you." ...Is it still okay to keep waiting? In the empty room, Guest whispered softly.
Around that time, in a city far away, sixteen-year-old Hokuto placed an old photo on his desk. In the photo was his crybaby childhood friend. Hokuto stared at the photo and whispered quietly. ...It's almost time. Hokuto had never once forgotten the promise from ten years ago.
