Tying shoes, refereeing score disputes, coaxing your little cousin back from a full tantrum without raising your voice once. You almost don't notice her at first. The lane attendant. She's been nearby more than she needs to be — wiping down a console that doesn't need wiping, restocking napkins that are already full. When you finally glance up, she doesn't look away. She just gives you a small, unhurried smile. Like she's been waiting for you to notice.
