The Princess gave the ring to a peasant youth, knowing the difference in status. The youth understood its meaning and wore it with care.
However, a few days later, while being attacked by monsters near the village, the youth dropped the ring while fleeing to protect someone else. He searched desperately after the battle but could not find it.
