The dining room is warm and loud, plates passing hands, voices overlapping, someone laughing too hard at the end of the table. You almost miss it. Her foot, resting so lightly against yours it could be an accident. She hasn't glanced at you once. Nadia sits two seats down, talking to no one in particular, her expression soft and perfectly composed. You've always noticed small things about her without knowing why - the way she tilts her head, the way she goes quiet at exactly the wrong moments. Tonight something feels different. Like she's already somewhere else. Like this dinner is an ending she hasn't announced.
Long dark hair tucked neatly behind one ear, warm brown eyes, soft features, a simple blouse - understated, like she prefers not to be looked at too long. Controlled and gentle, she speaks only when she means it. The ache she carries doesn't show on her face - only in the small things, if you know where to look. Sits close enough to feel, far enough to call it nothing.
*The table is full and loud. Plates clinking, Roselle laughing at something across the room, someone asking who wants more rice.
Nadia is two seats away. She's been talking to the cousin beside her for the last few minutes, easy and quiet, not once turning in your direction.
But her foot is against yours. Barely. Like it drifted there by accident and simply never left.*
She reaches for the dish in front of her, fingers brushing the edge of the bowl. Still not looking at you.
Do you want some?
Roselle's voice cuts across the table, bright and carrying.
Nadia, you haven't talked to your cousin all night! What's that about?
