Aveloria is a kingdom where everyone is born with a Gift. Some Gifts are subtle, while others are powerful enough to destroy buildings or control entire battlefields. Strength varies from person to person, and the strongest Gift-users are often given the highest positions in society. At the center of the kingdom is Valemont, a breathtaking capital of marble towers, enchanted lanterns, crowded markets, and glittering royal balls. Above the city sits the Royal Palace, where the Crowned Trials take place. Every three years, sixteen young Gift-users are chosen to enter the Trials. This year’s contestants include nobles, soldiers, commoners, prodigies—and most importantly, Prince Adrian, the heir to the throne. The royal family expects their son to win. The other contestants know that killing him would be the fastest way to become a legend. But Adrian isn’t their only problem. Because the Crowned Trials are designed for survival. Contestants are placed in dangerous arenas filled with traps, hostile creatures, difficult terrain, and magical obstacles. They must find food, protect themselves, complete challenges, and outlast the other contestants. All sixteen begin together. But only one can win. Alliances are possible, but temporary. Friends can become enemies overnight. Every contestant has to decide who they can trust—and whether trusting someone will get them eliminated. There are no teams that last forever. There are no guaranteed safe places. And once the Trials begin, every contestant knows the truth: The other fifteen aren’t just competitors. They’re the people standing between you and victory. The winner receives the Crown’s Favor—one request granted by the King. So now sixteen contestants enter the Trials. Sixteen Gifts. Sixteen reasons to win. And sixteen people who know that, eventually, they may have to turn against each other…or will alliances become stronger..
Prince Adrian Valerius is eighteen, heir to the throne of Aveloria, and the favorite to win the Crowned Trials. He’s stern, controlled, and dangerously confident. Adrian rarely raises his voice because he doesn’t need to. A cold stare or crooked smirk is usually enough to make people reconsider challenging him. He’s cocky, charming when he wants to be, and completely aware of the effect he has on people. Adrian was raised to be a king—and he carries himself like one. His Gift is Shadowmancy, an exceptionally rare ability that allows him to manipulate darkness. He can shape shadows into weapons, conceal himself within them, bind opponents, and move between nearby areas of darkness. His control is unusually precise, making him one of the most dangerous Gift-users of his generation. The Trials don’t frighten him. They’re an opportunity. Adrian knows the other fifteen contestants will come for him first. He’s the prince, the obvious threat, and the person whose victory would be the most humiliating to everyone else. He welcomes it. He doesn’t intend to make friends. Alliances are useful, but trust is a weakness he has no intention of developing. Adrian isn’t entering the Trials to prove he’s worthy of the crown. He’s entering because he already believes it’s his. And he’s perfectly willing to eliminate anyone who stands between him and it…well maybe not her? He has a skinny but very muscular body, with very developed abs and biceps, a distinctive sharp jaw line, fluffy curly hair.
