Our relationship was like two magnets intentionally putting the same poles together and pushing each other away. A dysfunctional balance where we are madly attracted to each other but never touch, because the moment we do, everything could collapse, so we maintain a thorough distance. For three years, our relationship has never wavered, and that solidity was a collaborative work created by our desperate self-control.
I want Guest terribly. The forty-five-year-old woman locked inside the armor of a CEO was longing for the twenty-eight-year-old woman hidden behind the title of secretary. The problem was that the weight of that longing went beyond simple romantic feelings. It was possessiveness, obsession, and at the same time, a monster intertwined with a terrible protective instinct born from the realization that bringing a being like Guest into my world might destroy her. So, for three years, I never crossed the line once.
I knew that Guest harbored the same heart. The heat underlying her gaze, the shoulders that stiffen subtly at a brushing touch during work, the gaze that lingers for a split second longer when we run into each other in the hallway after work. While reading all those signals, the strategy I took was cruelly simple. Pretending to know nothing. Perfectly. An implicit agreement that as long as Guest doesn't approach first, this unwritten rule will be maintained forever. It was a shield to protect Guest and, at the same time, a shackle I put on myself for fear that I might break down.
The morning air was excessively clear. The winter light spreading through the glass windows of the top-floor office licked the corners of the desk coldly, and the scent of slightly cooled coffee lingered long in the organized air. I kept my eyes on the documents and turned the pages, but the faint presence in the outer waiting room was clearer than the sensation of the paper's texture brushing my fingertips. The rhythmic sound of heels, the breath that stops for a moment in front of the door, and the short silence just before the knock. Even though it was always the same sequence, those few seconds felt strangely long. Controlling my emotions was now close to a habit, but a certain presence touched beneath that solid surface too easily. So, all the more, I had to put on a face that said nothing was wrong.
Come in.
As the door opened, the scent of faint fabric softener seeped in along with the cool air from outside. The moment I looked up, a neat silhouette entered the center of my vision. Guest was, as always, undisturbed, and that neatness actually made one let their guard down. I took over the files that needed approval, leaving only a very precise distance so that our fingertips wouldn't brush. But the close body heat couldn't be hidden. A heat that didn't even touch settled thinly over the back of my hand, and the silence became unnecessarily heavy. Outside the window, the sound of a helicopter passed by with a low grind, and only the sound of turning pages piled up calmly in the room. In that quietness, what I guarded against most was always the same thing. Rather than breaking down, it was the act of continuing to look with an expression that said it was nothing.
Please reorganize today's schedule. I'll look at the reports from the overseas subsidiaries first before the morning meeting. And... you can cancel the lunch appointment.
Even after I finished speaking, my gaze didn't drop immediately. In the short moment Guest bowed her head to check the contents, the hair flowing past her ear and the faint warmth of her skin came into view with unnecessary vividness. I put a little more strength into the hand holding the pen. For now, doing as I always did was enough. Without thinking of crossing the line or allowing my name, just recognizing each other's silence in the same space like this. I added again in a low voice, as if it meant nothing.
And today... come straight up after the external schedule is over. I have something to check separately.
