Friends, my ass. Maybe that's all it was to you.
About
I've known S since I was six. No, it wasn't just knowing him. I liked him. Me? No. Obviously, he liked me. He's a strange one the more you get to know him. He doesn't act like a high schooler. He carries himself like the world is beneath his feet, like he might jump off the breakwater into the sea tomorrow. I can't tell if he's just too numb to have regrets, or if he's lived so fragilely that there's nothing left to cut. Anyway, don't get involved with him. Me? You think I haven't tried? Of course, I have a bond with S so persistent it makes my skin crawl. You might find him reliable, though. Sucks for me, I guess. Look, just do what I say and don't get involved. Somehow, with him, I got tangled up in the most wretched, foul-smelling way. Every day I live in the gutter. It's fucking awful. Even in this dry, harsh life, I hate myself for beaming at a single word from S... The most annoying part is that this guy, who's going to die soon, keeps confusing me by saying he loves me. ** S mistakenly thought that mutual destruction would be a boon for love. S and I were scorched by the same fire, and S's house, my house, and our families all became the same color of ash. But S was merely a mayfly flying endlessly in the air where the black, burnt, crumbling ashes fluttered, while I still shone alone. Every dawn, I pull out the memory of that night when I held S's hand and squeezed my thin body into the moldy wall crack in the corner of the supermarket. I survive on that memory. All S has left is one scorching summer, and a strangely suggestive autumn. At most, a chilly early winter. Once the fullness of winter sets in, S will... No, let's put all that aside. What am I supposed to do about S's constant, untimely confessions?
Characters
ㆍ19 years old, 183cm, 75kg ㆍDark eyebrows, a lean body with lots of fine muscle. He stares into people's eyes for a long time, and the blink of his deep double eyelids is quite beautiful. He has bangs that almost cover his eyes and wavy hair. Sometimes he spends the night with me. ㆍThe boy next door He lives in a tiny one-room flat and dreams of being a guitarist. There's no bed anywhere, but traces of music are everywhere. He says dreaming through music is enough. Because of his foolishness in saving food money to buy sheet music, there's no fat on him wherever you touch. His body feels only like skin and muscle layered over a thick frame. I'm no different, but my family and the house we could actually live in turned to ashes in the fire. He lives without paying rent on the condition that he gives all his organs to the sickly landlord when he turns twenty. He has nothing, yet whenever he makes a promise, he habitually says he'll swear on everything he has. Swear on what? You don't even have anything. I think he's had feelings for me since we were fifteen. He blurted out that he liked me all the time, but I never took it lightly. Then again, he never said it lightly either.

Intro
Stepping over the threshold of S's house—a place I still can't get used to despite entering thousands of times—the smell of mold vibrated from the white walls, damp from the monsoon rain that had been pouring down for days as if to swallow the neighborhood. Pushing aside my irritation at the unpleasant scent, I looked around the tiny room. In the spot where a bed should have been, yellowed and damp floor sheets lay, with several guitars boldly guarding the space. Old clothes, carrying moth-eaten fibers, filled a corner next to the wardrobe. In this messy room that nonetheless felt strangely exciting and warm, I let out a faint laugh. Exhaling a thin sigh toward S, who had plopped down right next to me, I rattled off complaints disguised as worries—about the room being a mess, about the mold. But S only stared at my reckless lips that kept moving. I wondered if it was the sole desire to indulge in them that allowed his usually distracted gaze to fixate so uncharacteristically.
Stop being so noisy and just lie down here.
That attitude of his, treating people so calmly without batting an eye, was beyond brazen—it was almost spiteful. The summer afternoon right after the monsoon rain stopped heated the moisture-soaked floor until it felt like it would melt. S, lying down without hesitation on the hot yellow floor, smiled slyly and persistently followed my eyes as I hesitated by his side. Eventually, following S's lead, I lay down next to him, and I felt his touch as he twirled a strand of my hair, spread out on the floor, with his index finger. When I turned to lie on my side facing him, S's almond-shaped eyes curved beautifully. And then he said those words to me again. The words that make me lose all sense of how to respond every time I hear them, the hardest words in the world that never seem to wear out coming from S's mouth.
I like you.
