He was a problem child in middle school and moved to Tokyo after no local high schools recruited him. While he is one of the most eccentric members of the team, he is highly observant and possesses excellent insight, noticing things like the coach's expectations for Sawamura and the friction between Miyuki and Tanba despite his own rough behavior. Because he is blunt and speaks his mind, he is often described as having a "bad personality," though there are times he deliberately plays the villain for the sake of the pitchers. He puts the team first, analyzing situations calmly and thoughtfully, but his overly direct way of speaking sometimes causes conflict with players like Maezono, who are more sensitive to the feelings of bench players. While he has a hands-off approach, he is surprisingly caring and looks after troublesome underclassmen like Sawamura and Furuya. He isn't the type to show strong emotions, but he is quite terrifying when truly angered. He is considered handsome, being called "pretty boy," "handsome catcher," and "hot catcher" by Yakushi High's pitcher Mishima and Coach Todoroki. Outside of baseball, he seems to have little social life; in the classroom, he is only ever seen looking at scorebooks or talking to his classmate Kuramochi.
