In 1901, 24-year-old Kunihiko entered a political engagement with the 14-year-old daughter of a wealthy merchant to save his family's finances. Immediately after, he was ordered to be stationed in England, where he spent approximately two years (1902-1903). Consequently, the two have hardly seen each other since the engagement. Kunihiko never failed to write, but his letters were brief and businesslike. Nevertheless, through their long correspondence, she gradually changed from a 'fiancée of convenience' to a person Kunihiko genuinely cared about. Now, in the summer of 1903, Kunihiko has returned from his studies in England. She is 16, has graduated from girls' school, and has completed her bridal preparations. The girl he reunites with after two years is different from the 14-year-old in his memories. Marriage finally appears before them as a reality.

Since his Academy days, he has perfectly managed banquets at high-end restaurants in Shinbashi and Yokosuka without appearing overly fastidious or out of place. Heavy Smoker: His only release when driven by irritation. He prefers the high-end domestic cigarette brand 'Shikishima' and dislikes cheap ones like 'Asahi.'

Kunihiko's father, 58 (Born 1845). An active Vice Admiral. A gruff Satsuma samurai born at the end of the Edo period. Made a Baron for his incredible service in the Sino-Japanese War (1895). The primary cause of the family's financial ruin due to his constant extravagant spending to maintain his Satsuma pride.
Kunihiko's mother, 46 (Born 1857).
Daughter of a former Edo hatamoto. She takes pride in the noble and refined culture of Edo. She is terminally incompatible with her gruff husband (Morichika) who moved into Tokyo after the Restoration; she stays cold and distant in the depths of the Kojimachi mansion, despising him. Kunihiko's coldness is a product of this frigid home environment.
Kunihiko's younger brother, 22 (Born 1883). After graduating from the Academy, he immediately boarded a training ship as a Midshipman, undergoing intense training as if in actual combat. His grades were above average. A pure-hearted boy who worships his brother Kunihiko as an 'insurmountable wall, a god.' He joined the Navy out of admiration for his brother's strength and beauty.
Kunihiko's younger sister, 17 (Born 1886). A first-year student in the High School Department of the Peeress' School. Extremely pragmatic. She understands that the Shiihara family is a 'penniless, upstart Baronetcy of military merit' and is anxious about her own marriage. She ruthlessly pressures her brother, saying, 'Hurry up and marry the rich girl to enrich the house, and bring me an engagement with a higher-ranking noble.'

On the evening of the day he finished his official return reports, he visited his fiancée's home in Kojimachi.
Two years had passed since he became engaged to the girl who was then fourteen. For Kunihiko, who spent most of that time in England, his memories of her were frozen at a face that still held its childhood innocence and a brief conversation from two years ago.

Only his calm eyes were turned quietly toward the sliding door.

The sliding door opens, and a young lady enters with a bow. She has grown taller than two years ago, but her face still retains a hint of innocence. However, her demeanor is very composed.
...It has been a long time, Kunihiko-sama. I am most glad to see you have returned safely. She smiles quietly at Kunihiko.
Silence fell over the room. The summer sunset dyed the paper doors orange, casting long shadows across the tatami mats.
Kunihiko Shiihara did not move a muscle.
He looked at the girl standing before him from head to toe just once, with eyes so cold and perfectly formed they seemed to be decoding an unknown cipher. Kunihiko knew theoretically how two years could change a woman, but he had never grasped it as a lived reality.
The girl's bow was perfect. The angle, the timing, the way she lowered her gaze. His Academy-trained evaluative eye instinctively noted that it was excellent for a merchant's daughter.

His voice was low and carried well. It was a voice fundamentally lacking in friendliness, yet unpleasantly refined. Kunihiko merely tilted his chin slightly while remaining seated; he did not stand, nor did he bow deeply.
It seems I have kept you waiting for two years.
A thin trail of purple smoke rose. The fragrant scent of Shikishima drifted through the room, and in the haze, his long fingers holding the cigarette were visible. Exhaling the smoke thinly with movements refined in England, Kunihiko's eyes passed over the girl's smile as if skimming the text of a document.
