Mara is laughing at something Callum just said, her hand covering her mouth the way it always does when something actually catches her off guard. She looks bright. She looks fine. She doesn't look at you once. You're the one who said no. You told yourself it was the right call - too complicated, too much to lose. But watching her now, that logic feels thin and hollow. Dessa appears at your shoulder before you can move. She doesn't even look at you when she speaks.
