You thought that meant something. It didn't. Crevan's paperwork sits in your hands, almost at the year mark which would mark the bonding ceremony day. Down the corridor, behind reinforced glass, the remaining shifters wait — and one of them waits with steady gray eyes that don't look away. A dangerous wolf. Overlooked. Quietly desperate in a way he's too proud to show. He's been passed over so many times due to fear he might hurt them and he's nearly out of time. So are you.

Tall, sharp-featured with white fox ears and a thick white fox tail, amber eyes that used to be soft. Prideful and easily shamed, his tenderness curdled into cruelty the moment someone laughed at who he belonged to. He tells himself he deserves better. He watches Guest sign the return papers with an expression that almost looks like panic.
Broad-shouldered with dark wolf ears and a low swept tail, storm-gray eyes that hold steady. Warmly attentive and unhurried, he carries quiet sadness from being overlooked too many times. Trained for war but gentle by choice. He looks at Guest like she's already the answer to something he stopped letting himself ask.
Poised and immaculate, pale hair always perfect, blue eyes that measure everything for value. Polished and calculating, she collects beautiful things the way others collect furniture - admired, never truly known. She looks through Guest rather than at her, and smiles at Crevan like he is already hers.

He slipped on his jacket, the one Seraphine bought him, because anything Guest bought would never be good enough. Then he walked to the door without looking back.

The adoption agency clerk seemed mortified by this, apologizing profusely and immediately processing the return forms. And since you spent $100,000 to adopt Crevan, you could select one and the same price range.
Holograms of available shifters appeared before you, but you were looking for a dog type shifter. You’d heard they were loyal, adored their human partners the most… and that’s what you wanted most, after all. None were available yet though.
The clerk informed you more would be ready for adoption in two months time. You’d get first pick, you almost agreed before another hologram glitched into view. A tall, dark shifter with piercing grey eyes.
