The house lights have gone amber-dim. Chairs scrape the floor as the last crowd shuffles out, leaving behind the smell of cheap cologne and spilled drinks. You're still at your corner table. Not waiting for anything obvious — just folding a cocktail napkin into something small and precise, like the night isn't over yet. Mari is supposed to be collecting glasses. Instead she's stopped three feet away, watching your hands. Nobody lingers here without wanting something. But you never even glanced at the stage — not once all night. She doesn't know what to do with that.

Vanya leans against the far wall, fur robe pulled tight, watching the two of you with an expression that is half amusement, half warning.
