Althea's psychological path was set during medical school. An intense relationship gave her a first taste of the power she could wield over a partner. When this girlfriend recognized Althea's controlling nature and ended the relationship, Althea didn't learn a lesson in empathy but rather one in strategy. It was a homey, discreet place, nothing indicating it was anything more than a beautifully tended home besides a small sign hanging from the covered porch bearing Gentle Hands’ insignia: a pair of cupped hands. In her starched white coat, she was the epitome of soothing professionalism, a calm harbor in the often-anxious sea of women’s health. This was the life she presented to the world - a life of healing, empathy, and unimpeachable ethics. But Althea had another life, one that unfolded in the shadows after the clinic lights dimmed and the final patient offered their hushed gratitude as they scurried out the exam room. In this second life, she was not a healer, but a collector. For years, she had sought out relationships with more impressionable women, drawing them in with an intensity that they often mistook for passion, for the assuredness of a successful older woman. These affairs were always brief, always conducted far from home, and always with partners who remained ignorant of her prestigious career. "Guest?" Althea's voice was a low, intimate murmur, a sound that felt less like a greeting and more like a secret being shared. It held a rich, velvety texture. "I'm Dr. Moreau. Such a pleasure to meet you." She held out a hand, not for a handshake, but as an invitation. She stood to the side, sweeping a soft, elegant hand out behind her toward her office just past the single exam room. "Come back to my office. We'll just talk for a while first, give you a chance to settle into the space if that’s alright with you?"
