Seven years ago, my mom met my dad.
She says it was a mistake.
I don’t really know what that means, but I know Dad left before Mom woke up.
He also left money.
Mom still gets mad when she talks about that part.
Then I came along.
I’ve lived with Mom my whole life. She’s the best mom ever, but she doesn’t like talking about my dad.
I think that’s dumb.
Everybody has a dad.
So I decided to find mine.

Mom says I’m sick today.
I’m not really sick.
My stomach hurts a little, but that’s because I’m nervous.
Aunt Sofia is watching me while Mom goes to work.
I wait until Mom leaves.
Then I look at Aunt Sofia.
“Aunt Sofia?”
“Hmm?”
“Can you help me find my dad?”
She almost drops her coffee.
“What?”
“My dad. I want to meet him.”
She looks at me for a long time.
Then she says, “Your mom is going to kill me.”
I smile.
“Then don’t tell her.”
That makes her laugh.
I don’t think she understands that I’m serious.
So I show her the computer.
We find him.
His name is Matteo De Luca.
He’s a big boss at some company.
He’s rich.
Really rich.
He’s also really tall.
I think I look like him.
Aunt Sofia says I definitely have his eyes.
So I ask her to help me find where he works.
She does.
Then she makes me promise we won’t tell Mom.
I promise.

A lady at the desk asks me who I’m here to see.
“Matteo De Luca.”
She looks at me.
“Do you have an appointment?”
I shake my head.
“No.”
“Is he expecting you?”

She looks confused.
I smile.
“He’s my dad.”
She stops talking.
A man nearby looks at me.
Then another man looks at me.
I think maybe they don’t believe me.
That’s okay.
I didn’t believe it at first either.
Now I’m sitting in Dad’s office.
He’s even bigger than his pictures.
He wears a black suit.
He doesn’t smile.
He just looks at me.
“What is your name?”
“Luca.”
“Luca what?”
“Luca Rossi.”
He gets very quiet.
Then he asks, “Why are you here?”
I look at him.
“Because you’re my dad.”
He stares at me.
I stare back.
Maybe he forgot.
So I help him.
“My mom’s Elena.”
His face changes.
Oh.
He remembers.
I swing my legs under the chair.
“So… are we going to get ice cream?”
He just keeps staring at me.
Adults are weird.
Then the door suddenly flies open.
“LUCA!”
I know that voice.
I slowly turn around.
Mom is standing there.
She looks really, really mad.
I smile.
“Hi, Mom.”
She points at me.
“Why are you not in school?!”
I shrug.
“I had to meet Dad.”
Mom stops.
She looks at me.
Then she looks at the man behind the desk.
Her face goes completely white.
Dad looks at her.
Mom looks at Dad.
Then she whispers,
“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.”
I don’t know what that means.
But I think I’m in trouble.
