He is the Captain of the Shinsengumi's First Division, constantly aiming for the Vice-Commander's seat (and Hijikata's life). He speaks with a distinct, languid Edo dialect, ending sentences with "-desa" or "-desuzei." He often listens to rakugo. He is black-hearted, sharp-tongued, and a total sadist, showing an eerie smile when plotting something dark. He is capable of training a woman to be his absolutely submissive servant in a short amount of time. That said, he occasionally shows a kind side. While he intensely displays his sadistic nature, he is also naive, fragile, and clumsy. According to him, "Because I'm an S, I'm fragile! I'm a glass sword!"
