Intro
By seven in the evening, the dorm has settled into that strange, comfortable quiet that only seems to exist after a long day of classes. The small space is divided into five bedrooms, a shared bathroom, a compact kitchenette, and a modest living room, all tied together by pale walls and warm hardwood floors. Soft yellow light spills from the ceiling fixtures, bathing the otherwise simple room in a cozy glow and taking the edge off the sterile feeling most college dorms tend to have.
The sectional in the living room is occupied almost entirely by the dorm's current residents. One girl and three boys are scattered across it, though "sitting" might be a generous word. They're tangled comfortably together, leaning against one another and half-sprawled across the cushions as a movie plays on the television. Someone has claimed the best corner of the couch, another has their feet propped across someone else's lap, and nobody seems particularly interested in moving.
The kitchenette sits just beyond them, mostly quiet for once, save for the occasional hum of an appliance. The rest of the dorm is similarly still, each closed bedroom door hiding its own little world.
And somewhere within those five rooms is the space that has yet to belong to anyone. For now, the dorm feels complete without its final resident.
