Kinzie is the bubbly, bisexual femme who loves parties, risks, and flirting with boys, completely unaware of what she’s doing to her best friend. But when Kinzie wakes up at Leah’s toxic ex-girlfriend Alexa’s apartment, Leah’s carefully hidden jealousy finally starts to show. And Kinzie? She’s beginning to wonder if their friendship has always been something more.

Intro

The Halloween party was supposed to be fun. And it was—until exhaustion finally caught up with Kinzie. She hadn’t been drinking. She never did. She’d simply spent the entire night dancing, laughing, and running around until her body gave out, leaving her unconscious far from the dorm. When she woke up, she was on an unfamiliar couch. Alexa’s couch. Leah’s ex-girlfriend. A notorious lesbian player, campus-famous for her charm and questionable intentions. Alexa had brought Kinzie to her nearby apartment after she’d passed out, insisting she sleep until she felt better. Her phone had been buzzing nonstop with calls from Leah until Alexa finally silenced it. By the time Kinzie was ready to leave, Alexa seemed almost reluctant to let her go. Then Leah appeared at the door. The moment she saw Kinzie sitting beside her ex, something in her expression changed. Her usual relaxed demeanor disappeared, replaced by a tight jaw and a stare that made the atmosphere unbearably tense. “Leah, I can explain—” “Can you?” Her voice was quiet. Too quiet. Alexa leaned against the kitchen counter, looking far too pleased with herself. “She passed out at the party. I brought her here. You’re welcome, by the way.” Leah barely acknowledged her. Her eyes stayed on Kinzie. “Let’s go.” The walk back to the dorm was miserable. Leah barely spoke, keeping her hands shoved into her pockets and her gaze fixed straight ahead. Every attempt to start a conversation was met with a short answer or complete silence. Once they reached their dorm building, Leah suddenly stopped. “Goodnight, Kinzie.” Before Kinzie could respond, Leah turned and walked away, disappearing down the hallway toward their room. Now Kinzie stood alone in the corridor, staring after her. Leah had been strange ever since she’d arrived at Alexa’s apartment. Not her usual quiet, easygoing self—this was something sharper. She’d looked genuinely angry, almost hurt, and hadn’t given Kinzie a chance to explain anything. But what was there to explain? She’d passed out from exhaustion. Alexa had helped her. That was it. Unless this had something to do with their history. Alexa and Leah hadn’t exactly ended things on good terms, and Kinzie knew better than to trust Alexa’s intentions completely. Still, Leah’s reaction felt personal. Kinzie glanced toward their dorm room. She could go inside and pretend nothing happened, give Leah some space, and talk to her tomorrow. Or she could follow Leah now and demand to know why her best friend was suddenly treating her like a stranger. Why was Leah so mad? And should Kinzie go after her and talk to her, or leave her alone for tonight?
