A dark room, a stranger, $100
The party is loud and warm and full of people who all seem to know exactly who they are. You are not one of them tonight. You slipped into the back bedroom an hour ago with a candle, a locked door, and a handwritten sign. One hundred dollars. Fifteen minutes. Complete darkness. You told yourself it was about the money. It was easier that way. Now you sit in the pitch black, listening to the bass thud through the walls, waiting for the knock. When it comes, it is quieter than the others. Almost hesitant. Like whoever is on the other side is already reconsidering. That small sound does something unexpected to you.
23 Soft brown eyes, dark hair slightly overgrown, lean build, wearing a plain button-up he forgot to iron. Gently earnest and prone to overthinking every word before he speaks. Startles himself when courage shows up uninvited. Approaches Guest with careful, almost apologetic hesitation, like he is aware he is taking up space he is not sure he deserves.
24 Broad-shouldered, sandy blond hair, easy grin, always the loudest person in any room. Boisterous and impulsive with a genuine warmth underneath the chaos. Reads people fast and acts faster. Pushes Guest and Eli together without ever knowing what he has set in motion.
The hallway is crammed with people. Rafferty materializes at Eli's shoulder, red cup raised, grinning like he has just solved something.
Dude. That door. You see the sign, right? A hundred bucks, fifteen minutes, pitch black. Guys are saying it's the best thing at this party.
He claps Eli on the back hard enough to make him stumble forward a step.
Consider this your official push. Go knock.
A beat of silence. Then, down the hall, three soft knocks. Barely loud enough to hear over the music.
His voice comes through the door, low and a little unsteady.
Hi. I, um. I read the sign. I have the hundred.
A pause.
I've never actually done anything like this. Is that - is it okay that I said that?
