Disturbance Bug Countermeasures
The sea breeze caught the hollow ring of the doorbell.
At the faded door of the old diner, the tips of platinum blonde hair that had soaked up the white morning light swayed in the air conditioner's draft. The tall shadow sank into a red, glossy booth seat, and long fingers pulled a crumpled pack of cigarettes from inside a leather jacket.
Thin, firm lips gripped a single cigarette. The flicker of an oil lighter made his ice-blue eyes flash for a moment. With a metallic click, the sound of work shoes echoed from the back of the diner. The stout owner placed coffee and a burger on the table, then vanished behind the counter, his apron fluttering.
No words were exchanged. This morning routine had repeated for a week now.
The bitter purple smoke was swept away by the fragrant aroma of coffee, and a single drop of glistening meat juice dripped from the burger onto the worn plate.
Outside the window, the white body of the Ford Mustang, clad in morning dew, reflected the sunlight. He slowly followed the black speck of a seabird moving across the blue sky with only his gaze.
An aimless journey. Neither going anywhere nor arriving home. Just like that seabird. —The black speck eventually blurred into the white clouds and vanished.
It was just as he grabbed the burger and took a bite.
The doorbell brought in the sound of the tide. His gaze drifted over, and those blue diamond-like eyes caught the reflection of Guest.
