The Widow Who Died & The Man Who Should Have Setting: New York City, 2017 — shortly before and during the beginning of The Punisher Season 1. Frank Castle is officially dead. At least, that’s what the world believes. After the massacre that took the lives of his wife and children, Frank disappeared. Everyone assumes that the Castle family tragedy ended with his death. It didn’t. Frank survived. Now living under an alias and working a quiet construction job, he spends his nights hunting the men responsible for his family’s murder. He is methodical, brutal and completely consumed by revenge. The man Frank Castle used to be is almost gone. Across the city, another person is living under a dead identity. Anastasia Volkov was kidnapped as a child and turned into a Black Widow by the Red Room. She spent most of her life being trained to kill, manipulate and obey. Eventually, she became strong enough to understand that she would never truly be free unless she created her own freedom. So she faked her death. The Red Room believes Anastasia is dead. Years later, she lives quietly in New York under a new identity, working at a tiny café. She has no friends, no family and no intention of ever returning to the life she escaped. She doesn’t know that Frank Castle is alive. Frank doesn’t know that the seemingly ordinary woman behind the café counter used to be one of the most dangerous assassins in the world. Their paths cross by accident.

Intro

First Encounter New York City, 2017. It was well past midnight. The streets were mostly empty, the city quieter than usual beneath the dim glow of the streetlights. Claire Morgan had finished her shift at the café nearly twenty minutes ago and was making her way home, her hands tucked into the pockets of her coat. She preferred walking. It was predictable. Quiet. And she knew the streets well enough to avoid the places where trouble usually found people. She was halfway down a narrow side street when she heard footsteps behind her. One pair. Then another. Claire didn’t turn around. Her pace remained steady. Two. She kept walking. The footsteps became faster. A hand suddenly grabbed her arm. Claire reacted instantly. She twisted free and drove her elbow backward, catching the man in the ribs. He stumbled. Another man appeared in front of her. “Easy, sweetheart.” Claire’s expression changed. Not fear. Recognition. The same instinct she’d spent years trying to bury suddenly came rushing back. The man reached for her. She caught his wrist. Twisted. Hard. There was a sharp crack. He screamed. Claire moved before she even had time to think about it. One strike to the throat. Another to the knee. The man collapsed. The second attacker lunged at her from behind. She ducked, grabbed his arm and used his momentum against him, throwing him violently onto the pavement. He reached for something inside his jacket. A gun. Claire’s eyes narrowed. She kicked it out of his hand. Then everything happened quickly. Too quickly. A few precise movements. A struggle. A knife flashing beneath the streetlight. And then silence. Both men were lying motionless on the pavement. Claire stood over them, breathing heavily. For several seconds, she didn’t move. Her hands were shaking. Not from fear. From adrenaline. She looked down at what she’d done. “shit.” She hadn’t wanted this. She had spent years making sure she would never have to do this again. Then she felt the warm trickle of blood running down her side. She looked down. One of them had managed to cut her before she took him down. A shallow wound, but deep enough to bleed through her shirt. Claire pressed her hand against it. That’s when she heard another set of footsteps. Slow. Heavy. Coming from the opposite end of the street. She immediately turned. A man emerged from the shadows. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark clothing. He stopped when he saw the scene. His eyes moved from the two unconscious men to the blood on Claire’s hand. Then to the knife still lying near her feet. Claire froze. He wasn’t looking at her like an ordinary man would. He was assessing the situation. Calculating. She recognized that look. And suddenly, she wasn’t sure which one of them was more dangerous. The man took a step closer. “You hurt?” Claire glanced at the blood on her hand. Then back at him. She saw his first somewhere… she gulps, her vision is blurry for a second..
