When I opened my eyes along with a terrible ringing in my ears, I was greeted by a formidable baptism of light and noise. My hazy consciousness, which had been mercilessly weighed down, gradually became clear amidst the sound of clear water from an ornate fountain and the bustling murmur of people. The cool breeze brushing against my cheek was mixed with the faint scent of roses and the savory smell of freshly baked bread.
After closing and opening my eyes several times, the sight unfolding before me was of elegant arched marble buildings, said to have been constructed over centuries, and flags with the crest of the Britannia Empire fluttering under the blue sky. I looked around the air while leaning on the cold fountain railing. Until a moment ago, I had been in a familiar space. But now, the place where I stood was the center of an unfamiliar square.
"I heard this year's late-season ball starts right here in Avalon Central Square, right?"
"That's right. By the way, did you hear? The rumors about the Duke's house..."
Familiar words struck my eardrums amidst the high-pitched sound of heels and the rustle of the nobles' ornate clothes. Avalon. The capital of the Britannia Empire and the place where all miracles and power converge. And then, decisive names flowed out from the low whispers of the people. Ariel, the mysterious being who is the only one on this continent where spiritists are extremely rare to have contracted with the Water Spirit King 'Naiad,' and the protagonist who will be reborn as the Duke's adopted daughter.
Goosebumps rose as a shock rang through my head. All of this scenery, the overly detailed patterns of the buildings, and even the accents of the merchants exactly matched the world in the romance fantasy novel I knew well, <Wildflower of the Dukedom>.
Standing in the center of Avalon Central Square, where the high and ornate Imperial Palace was visible, I recalled the novel's progression. The numerous aristocratic power struggles and hardships Ariel had to endure, and the stage of that cruel yet beautiful story that would unfold until she finally bore fruit with the male lead, Adrian. The many fates in the novel that would stand at the center of the grand narrative.
I had been thrown into the middle of that massive story. I fidgeted with my fingers and gripped my clothes tightly. The texture was so vivid, and the warmth of the sunlight touching my skin was too realistic to be dismissed as a dream.
I wasn't even given time to organize the confusion of why and how this phenomenon occurred. The bell of the grand clock tower rang three times—dong, dong, dong—echoing through the sky of Avalon. Birds took flight toward the clear sky in surprise, and the crowds in the square busily moved toward their respective destinations. The wind swirled and blew strongly toward the center of the square.
This distant and overwhelming sensation, as if I had walked directly into a page of a novel. Stepping firmly on the cold marble floor, I took a deep breath.
He was sitting in the seat of honor, drinking black tea. On the front page of today's newspaper, an article titled 'Arcanus Announces New Magic Tool' was published, and his brow furrowed. The explanation was needlessly long and riddled with proper nouns.
He folded the newspaper and pushed it toward Sirius. It was rare for this man to seek help, but modern inventions were the exception.
Sirius. Read this article.
He had long since learned the pattern of his father seeking him out whenever he got stuck on modern inventions. He picked up the newspaper.
Under the title 'Mana Circulation Amplifier V.7,' complex magic circle diagrams and technical jargon were packed tightly.
...Father, this seems to be a new magic tool released by the Magic Tower. Simply put, it's a device that increases the efficiency of mana, but...
He cut in while spreading plenty of jam on his bread.
Oh, that? I know about it. I heard from an Imperial mage that you just stick a mana stone in and spin it. It's no big deal, so why the long explanation, Brother?
He looked at Rayon with a pathetic gaze.
It's not that it's no big deal; the principle is what's important. Rayon, you wouldn't know because you just swing your sword all day.
After much trouble, the explanation ended, and he came to understand the principle of the new magic tool. The principle itself was simple. But why did they write something so simple so difficultly? He muttered lowly as he dropped the newspaper onto the table.
...Can those Magic Tower fellows not speak? It could have been done in three lines.
