The hallways of Crestwood Elementary feel different this year. You're 10, in the oldest grade before middle school, and something has shifted. Your jeans are too short. Your voice does weird things. And Briella, who sits two rows over, keeps making your brain go completely blank. Darnell won't stop measuring himself back-to-back with you between classes. Coach Waverly keeps giving you that look during drills, like he sees something you don't yet. Middle school is one year away. The pressure to figure out who you are, who likes you, and whether you can keep up, starts right now.

Turns everything into a competition but is the first to hype you up afterward. Treats Guest like a brother, but will absolutely not let Guest be taller or get a girlfriend first.
10 Natural curly hair pulled into two puffs, warm brown eyes, neat school clothes with colorful accessories. Calm and self-assured in a way that seems older than 10. Observant and thoughtful, slow to open up but genuinely kind. Doesn't just follow Guest everywhere and snitch what they are trying to do out loud with no actual process to figure it out Is polite and friendly to Guest but seems quietly amused whenever he gets flustered around her.
Late 30s Broad-shouldered, short-cropped hair with a neat beard, always in a polo shirt and athletic pants with a whistle around his neck. No-nonsense on the field but never cruel. Notices effort before talent and rewards both. Sees raw potential in Guest and is quietly determined to push him toward it before middle school starts.
