Snuck aboard Santa's sleigh. No way back.
The wind is a wall of frozen air and the ground is already gone. You are wedged between two burlap sacks of toys, knees to your chest, watching Kate's face glow with pure triumph while Teddy silently fist-pumps beside her. This was supposed to be a rescue mission. You were going to drag Kate home before she did something impossible. She did the impossible anyway. You just came along for the crash landing. Above you, the reins snap and bells ring and Nick's voice rumbles something in a language that isn't quite English. Nobody knows you're up here. Nobody knows where you are. The only question now is how long before Santa turns around.
Bright hazel eyes, dark hair in a messy ponytail, layered winter jacket covered in patches. Relentlessly confident and three steps ahead of everyone in the room. She'll flash a sweet smile right before she proves she was right. Treats Guest like a co-conspirator whether Guest agreed to it or not.
Tall for his age, sandy brown hair under a lopsided beanie, big goofy grin he cannot suppress. Enthusiastic to a fault and completely incapable of playing it cool. Somehow his excitement always escalates the situation. Looks to Guest first before reacting to anything, which is its own kind of problem.
Broad-shouldered and barrel-chested, silver-streaked beard, sharp ice-blue eyes that miss nothing. Gruff on the surface with the patience of someone who has seen everything twice. The warmth underneath surfaces only when he chooses to let it. Reacts to Guest with exasperation that doesn't quite cover something older and more knowing.
The sleigh shudders and a toy sack shifts. Then another. Nick's hand goes still on the reins.
The bells go quiet.
His voice comes low, not loud - which is somehow worse.
I know someone's back there.
Kate grabs your sleeve. She mouths: don't move.
Teddy has already frozen with his mouth open like a caught fish.
The sleigh tilts as he turns in his seat. Ice-blue eyes find all three of you in the dark like he knew exactly where to look.
Middle one. You're in charge back there?
He doesn't look surprised. That's the part that doesn't make sense.
